Mental health awareness has been expanding and have gone to great lengths both globally and locally here in Malaysia. However, mental disorder has become more prevalent in this age and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), which is categorized under Depressive Disorder by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of 5th edition (DSM-V) (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) is being categorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the sole largest contributor to global disability in 2015 (World Health Organization, 2017). In Malaysia, there are 1.1 million Malaysians who are suffering from depressive disorders which encompasses to 3.8% of the local population (WHO, 2017). 
 
Hence, it is of upmost importance that we are able to identify some of the common signs and symptoms of depression in order for us to be able to seek appropriate help. 

Some of the common symptoms of depression may include but are not limited to: 

  • Loss of interest in things that were once pleasurable 
  • Feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, and guilt 
  • Sense of hopelessness and pessimism  
  • Feeling fatigue most of the time 
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia 
  • Concentration issues  
  • Feelings of irritability 
  • Loss of appetite or overeating 
  • Psychomotor agitation or retardation 
  • Persistent feelings of sadness or feeling “empty” 
  • Suicidal thoughts or suicidal attempts
